March 7th, 2026 — Locking Dance Workshop

Locking, developed by its pioneer Don Campbell, is a specific, lively hip-hop lifestyle that arose in the 1970s. It places emphasis on groove, strong arms, and leg dynamism. In this workshop, for ages 13 to adult, you will learn the basics of locking: a brief history and the quintessential moves. With a combination of verbal and physical instruction, followed by a freestyle cypher to close out the class, participants will develop a bodily knowledge of locking and show off their new moves and grooves with their classmates. After a quick historical introduction, we will practice: pacing, basic arm locks, wrist rolls, basic knee drops, the Muscle Man, the Scoobot, the Skeeterrabbit, and popular locking move combinations. This workshop is intended for dancers who have little to no experience with locking. Beginner to intermediate-level hip-hop dancers should expect to be challenged with new, athletic movements and a boundless cypher session.
